"Waterproof" to pass the EN ISO 20345 - 347 S2 S3 test for a product to be rated as waterproof after a 500m walk in 3cm of water the area of the sock that's wet must be under 3cm2 this is equivalent to 1000 steps, no material can ever be 100% waterproof it will always have some Ingres, unless it is lined with GORE-TEX if you are working in very wet conditions GORE-TEX lined products will give a much higher level of protection as they set the standard at 300,000 steps in 5cm of water and there has be no water ingress.
